ISLA HOLBOX, MEXICO

What to Do in Isla Holbox, Mexico, on vacation When it comes to travel destinations, Isla Holbox ― also known as “Holbox Island” ― is one of the best-kept secrets in Mexico. Located north of the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, the island is tropical, primitive, and pleasantly far away from civilization. Holbox is the antithesis of Cancun. You don’t come here for late night beach parties.

Central America is a whirlwind of delicious food, bright colors, and lively culture. With mariachi music, dancing, and an endless array of stuffed pupusas, you’ll get to experience a massive fiesta that never ends. Whether you want to take in the splendor of the Panama Canal or lounge on the beaches of Belize, Central America has something for everyone.

At Packed Perfectly, we’ll help you find the perfect destination, figure out what to pack for Mexico and Central America, and fill you in on all of our Central America and Mexico travel tips so you can plan the adventure of a lifetime.

Why You Should Go Before You Die

Central America is chock full of ancient history of some of the most advanced early civilizations. History lovers should explore the Mayan artifacts of Guatemala’s Quirigua and the Teotihuacán Ruins of Mexico City. For those planning a visit to the famous Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon, heads up! There is no shade, so when you are figuring out what to pack for Mexico or Central America, be sure to tuck a parasol or hat in your bag!

The jungle region of Costa Rica is lush and beautiful, full of natural wonders such as volcanoes and waterfalls. Hike through the forests and you might spot an exotic toucan — or even a spider monkey! Zip lining and bungee jumping are more wild, adrenaline-filled ways to explore the natural landscape.

Linking Central and South America, Panama has so much history to share. From the picturesque houses in Colon that feature bright, cheerful colors, to the urban mecca of Panama City and the Panama Canal, there is a lot to see and explore.

If you’re seeking the ultimate resort experience, Honduras may be the place for you! Roatan especially, features some of the most exotic beach locales including West Bay, Coxen Hole, and Sandy Bay. Snorkel parts of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and visit with colorful fish, whale sharks, and exciting marine life.

Lara’s Advice

My main Central America and Mexico travel tip is to eat! Close to the equator, Central America is an agricultural garden of Eden. You will sample some of the freshest, most flavorful fruit of your life in Central America. This region is also one of the largest coffee producing places in the world, so be sure to schedule a coffee tasting and a roaster tour, and get some coffee beans as a souvenir.

The local cuisine is out of this world. Feast on street tacos and roasted corn in Mexico, banana wrapped tamales in Guatemala, and tasty baleadas in Honduras. Be adventurous! Go to the local markets where the freshest, most authentic food is sold by the street vendors.

What To Pack

Wondering what to pack for Mexico, or any other Central American destination? Central America loves to party the night away, so make sure you are nightclub ready with a leather mini skirt and a killer pair of stilettos. Grab some red lipstick to liven up your travel wardrobe, as Latin America is all about bold patterns and bright colors. Top any outfit off with cork wedge sandals to strike the perfect balance between laid back beach weather and worldly go getter.
