Austin City Limits (ACL) runs from Oct. 6 – Oct. 15, 2017. The show encompasses two weekends to accommodate the large crowd it attracts. ACL brings in the heavy hitters ― rock stars who just might down a bottle of whisky on stage while belting out songs, like Pearl Jam did at the 2014 festival.
Enjoy mosh-pit-like dancing to the music of Skrillex, jump on someone’s shoulders to get a great view of Calvin Harris, sing all the words to Lorde and Lana del Rey songs, take a selfie with Beck, or go wild to a jam band. ACL offers you the 46-acre Zilker Park to run wild in, with plenty of music genres to enjoy, decadent food trucks, and a few cozy swimming holes for cooling off after a show. Who’s up for some festive skinny dipping?
Need shade? Don’t want to miss a football game? If you don’t opt for VIP passes ― which give you unfettered to access to most ACL Austin events ― there are bars in tents, with football games playing on large flat screens.
If you register your wristband ticket online, you can hook it up to your bank account and make it a cash-free festival. It’s a hassle-free way to pay for other events in our ACL festival guide.
You can purchase a general admission day pass for $100, or buy a three-day general admission pass for $255. A one-day VIP pass is $450 and three-day VIP pass is $1100. Considering the amount of talent and amenities offered, I would opt for VIP passes and get backstage to see your favorite bands. The site even offers a hotel package when you buy tickets.
The best way to get to Zilker Park from downtown Austin is by city bike or taking an uber. Expect a 15-minute walk before you arrive at ACL festival guide events.
An eight-foot bronze statue of Willie Nelson in downtown Austin signifies the experience you’ll have in this gem of a city that’s permeated with music, showcasing almost as many festivals as there are locals. But Austin has other tricks up its sleeve that set it apart from other Texas cities.
Austin is the only place in the U.S. where Formula 1 racing is hosted, it has the biggest urban bat population, it’s legal for women to go topless, and the metropolis is considered the live music capital of the world, with over one hundred active venues, and counting. In short, there’s lots to do beyond what you find in the average ACL festival guide.
Austin is a land of food trucks, which offer cuisine ranging from craft meats, to mini doughnuts, to fish tacos, to Asian fusion, to quite possibly the most delicious Monte Cristo I’ve tasted. These mobile delicatessens can become so popular that they morph and take root as proper restaurants. The trucks show up at Austin City Limits to offer you a great food experience, while you’re bouncing from show to show.
The weather in Austin can be unpredictable. On some winter days, you may find yourself wearing just a tee-shirt, and some fall days may make you break out rain boots. But summer days should find you sailing Lake Travis or Lake Austin, cruising around town drinking craft beer, or diving into the chilled waters of the natural swimming pool at Barton Springs.
After ACL Austin events conclude for the day, head to a street dubbed “dirty 6th”, which is swimming with bars and clubs. The west end of 6th Street draws an older, more refined crowd. This is a good place to end your night after a full, fun-packed day of ACL festival guide events.
