Nestled in the middle of East London’s gorgeous Victoria Park, Lovebox Festival encompasses the musical genres of indie, rock, electronic, and pop. There are also circus performers, cabaret dancers, and fringe acts. Founded by Groove Armada in 2002, it has expanded over the years to encompass a rocking scene. So begins our Lovebox London festival guide.
Lovebox is known as a wonderfully creative event, with stages and areas being elaborately designed, erected, and dressed. The 2009 festival site in particular was notable for featuring a treehouse, bowling alley, vintage fashion fair and a healing/massage area. Several themed bars and eating areas are also set up around the park.
We love how Lovebox has earned a reputation for being an urban-based, yet rural feeling, multi-dimensional festival, without the presence of camping. Due to its location in central London, accessibility to the festival is as easy as jumping on the tube and walking to the park. The festival is family friendly, offering a children’s area with friendly performances on the Fringe stage.
As we approached the park it was immediately clear how quickly the entrance line was moving. This is always a great sign of an elite event and that the staff are on the ball. We weaved our way past the Dr Seuss-style decor and through the crowd to the VIP area.
We were greeted by lavish Moroccan-style tents, packed full of people dancing, set up with colorful hanging lanterns and plush cushions. The DJ in the corner was spinning cool, unobtrusive beats. The experience was awesome enough to include in a Lovebox London festival guide.
This year’s area will take its inspiration from the wanderers, adventurers, aristocrats, and vagabonds who infiltrated the gypsy neighborhoods of Paris in the late 1800’s.
