Bali travel tips for vacation

Indonesia Travel Tips

With its beautiful natural scenery, the city of Ubud, Bali, is a lush, green jewel in the Balinese crown. Offering a pristine overlay of terraced rice paddies dotted with Hindu temples and shrines, Ubud is a favorite destination for hikers, yogis, and those searching for spiritual awakening. The spiritual city maintains a balance with native wildlife, implementing the Tri Hita Karana doctrine that all creatures should live harmoniously.

Where to Lodge in Style

If you love fashionable hotels, this is one of the best Bali Travel tips. The Four Seasons Ubud has an incredible buffet breakfast, morning yoga sessions, and a pool worth spending an entire afternoon in. There’s also the oasis-like Komaneka at Bisma hotel, located in the center of Ubud. Use this tranquil establishment’s prime cultural location to explore the town, if you can make it out of the hotel’s scenic, relaxing swimming pool, that is.

How to Get Around

If you stay in the center of Ubud, riding a bicycle is the best way to get around. On a bike, you won’t miss any of the little cafes and shops, as you explore the town. This is one of the simplest Bali travel tips, but it can add greatly to your cultural experience in Indonesia. If you want to head to to the Rice Paddies and Waterfalls, take a cab instead of biking. The waterfall is about a 45-minute drive from Ubud’s center.

By car, Ubud is 90-120 minutes inland from Denpasar Airport. Due to poor road quality in rural areas and brutal traffic congestion, allow for a slightly longer travel time if you travel during peak periods of tourism.

Great Destinations to Visit

Monkey Forest

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is only a short journey by foot or push bike from hotels located nearby. You have the opportunity to get up close and personal with a large family of Balinese long-tailed monkeys. Be forewarned, if you decide to buy the bananas to feed the monkeys, some hungry males might accost you. My advice: Throw the bananas and run!

Unique Shops

If you want to shop, Ubud is the place to open your wallet. Stay on Monkey Forest Road to continue into the city, walking to Jalan Raya Road. It’s easy to walk around Ubud. However, be sure look down every so often, as the sidewalks are commonly in disrepair or under construction. For a Balinese shopping experience, visit these stores:

Ma:an – Clothes

Puspita – Clothes

Yin and Yang – yoga clothes

Kou Cuisine – Balinese foods

Zarong – Jewelry

The Culinary Scene

Each time I go to Bali, I make a point to go to Sari Organik for lunch. This health food restaurant serves organic dishes with Balinese flair and fresh juices. There are three Sari Organiks. The Warung Bodag Maliah location is one of my favorite places to eat in Bali. It’s in the middle of a beautiful rice paddy field, and is well worth the 15-minute walk. If you don’t feel like walking, use the free motorbike pick up service.

Alchemy is a relaxing place to hang out. In addition to their laid back atmosphere, they also have fantastic salads, juices, and raw chocolate.

Another favorite place of mine to dine in Ubud is Bali Bunda. It has everything, from superfood health drinks, to bakery items, to classic Indonesian dishes. The eatery serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

One of the most helpful Bali travel tips for first-time visitors is to check out The Travel Fish for an in-depth list of restaurants in Ubud.

Health and Wellness

Ubud is known for its wellness retreats, yoga schools, healers, and healing spas. Places such as Alchemy Holistic offer treatments ranging from colonics to IV therapies. Healers are well known around town. Below are some great places to consider for promoting wellness.

Como Shambhala Estate

Como Shambhala Estate follows the philosophy that no two people are the same. This award-winning luxury spa resort uses a proactive approach for their retreats, where each guest consults with a resident expert to design a program that meets their specific needs and works toward individual goals. The wellness programs include a mix of ancient healing therapies and modern science to cleanse, heal, and rejuvenate you for optimal health and well-being.

Bagus Jati Health & Well-Being Retreat

For those looking for a scenic, serene spot to indulge in soothing spa treatments, healing Ayurvedic therapies, and fresh organic fare, Bagus Jati is a world-class center of holistic healing set amid a tropical rainforest. The specialist here uses a combination of ancient Indian and Chinese treatments, as well as exercise, nutritious menus, and lifestyle coaching.

Fivelements Puri Ahimsa

Positive, peaceful, and holistic transformation is the goal at this healing and wellness retreat, located just outside of Ubud. Therapies include Balinese massage, acupuncture, colonic cleansing and chakra balancing, as well as a nutrition plan and practices such as meditation, martial arts, and yoga, which promote balance and inner strength.

Yoga Barn

One of the best Bali travel tips for yoga lovers is to visit the Yoga Barn, an intricately crafted studio that creates an inspiring escape for nourishing body, the mind, and soul. Trek among rice paddies, an organic farm, and a jungle ravine to find the enchanting Yoga Barn. You are now a part of a vibrant expat community, in one of the most peaceful cities on earth.

The Yoga Barn offers a buffet of classes and workshops, retreats, and teacher training opportunities. It also offers an array of healers, from spiritual counselors to healers focusing on detox. Once you enter this melting pot of positivity and health, it’s tough to leave, which is why Yoga Barn offers a guest house for staying close to the endless opportunities that await.
